Even after the rough times brought upon us by the Covid-19 epidemic, the euro 2020 wasn’t canceled but instead postponed to 2021. This exciting adventure will start on the 11 of June with an opening game between Turkey and Italy. Now, let’s look into the list of favorites for this exciting competition. The stage is pretty homogenous, and it will be hard to figure out in advance the scenario which will develop. This can notably be seen on the odds offered for the euro21.
None of the countries greatly distinguishes itself from the rest. So, who is the favorite of the competition? Who will easily make it out from the group stage? Who will fail?UEFA EURO 2021 was one of the finest tournaments. We saw many upsets in the tournaments with big teams like France who failed to reach the Quarterfinals. We would now see, the teams that were favourites to win the competition at the start of the tournament.
England –
Firstly, the Southgate effect. He was first named as substitute interim coach in replacement of Sam Allardyce. The new coach qualified the three lions for this competition by finishing his group’s first position and is undefeated till now. Also, we shouldn’t forget in 2018, where they put on a good performance and finished second in their group, behind Belgium. After have defeated Columbia and later Sweden, but failed in the semifinals against Croatia, and again lost the match for 3rd place against Belgium. They are the favourites to win the competition, there performance against all teams in this Euro has been wonderful and they would face their biggest challenge that is Italy.
Spain-
After their bitter elimination in the Round of 16 against Russia during the World Cup 2018, the Spanish want to go back to their old good days. So, they will absolutely want to show off for this upcoming Euro21.With the absence of Sergio Ramos, the leading scorer in the national team despite being a center-back, we will see a disoriented Spanish team notably on the defensive side.
Without big names, the Iberian formation will rely on their young talented players, notably in the middle field around the veteran Sergio Busquets, Rodri, Pedri, Thiago Alcantara, Kobe, and Fabian Ruiz. At the front we have Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres and Adama Traoré. In defense, we will closely watch Aymeric Laporte debut after he refused to join the French team. Spain had a good Season at Euro 2021, they were the first team to score consecutive 5 goals in two games. They were eliminated against Italy in the Semi-finals.
Portugal–
The Portuguese are the titleholders. It’s highly unlikely for the squad to win the 2021 EURO with the same level of the game displayed during the last Euro 2016. Cristiano Ronaldo is at speed lost in Juventus and Eder hasn’t been standing out lately. Still, you can count on the Portuguese to be amongst the favorites yet again. The reason is rather simple, you shouldn’t look at the past but at the future.
The youth of this nation proved yet again that comparing the ratio population/big players, Portugal is still at the top. At the defensive end, they have Cancelo – Ruben Dias – Pepe – Guerreiro. In the middle we have Bruno Fernandes – Danilo – Renato Sanches. Finally, at the front, Joao Felix – Cristiano Ronaldo… what a team! Portugal were the defending champions, but were eliminated against Belgium at the Group Stage. They were the hot-favourites to win Euro.
Belgium-
Taking as reference the last 10 year’s competitions, The market places Belgium as one serious pretender to lift the trophy, with their odds at 6. With their generation of talented players such as Romelu Lukaku, Eden Hazard, and Kevin De Bryune, they have proven on many occasions being capable of facing big teams in tournaments as their 2-1 win against Brazil in the quarter-final of the World Cup in 2018. This is a golden generation of Belgium, but they lost to Italy in the Quarterfinals and has been not wining any major tournaments.
