Team India unlocked a new milestone on Sunday after they registered a massive 317-run victory over Sri Lanka in the third and final ODI match, to become the first team to achieve a win by such a big margin. The Rohit Sharma-led side also clean-swept the three-match ODI series as began their preparations for the upcoming World Cup on a winning note. Posted a total of 390/5, courtesy of the top knocks from Virat Kohli (166*) and Shubman Gill (116), Team India bundled out Sri Lanka for a meagre total of 73 runs after Mohammed Siraj took a four-wicket haul.
Apart from all this, one thing which will definitely remain in the memories of the fans and the players is the stunning dismissal of visitors’ skipper Dasun Shanaka by Kuldeep Yadav. With this win, Team India swept the three-match ODI series 3-0 and also registered the biggest-ever win by any team in the 50-over format. Opted to bat first, Team India posted a huge total of 390/5, courtesy of the big knocks from Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill (116), who also brought up his second ODI hundred.
Gill and Kohli’s After Gill was dismissed for a well-made 116, Kohli took charge and how.He brought up his second century in this series, his 46th in this format and 74th overall. Kohli then changed gears to take his batting a level higher in the last ten overs to finish with 166.Both the centurions have had a series to remember with the bat as they top the run-scoring charts.
Having scored 207 runs in the three innings at an average of 69, Gill had yet another promising series since being given the openerâs role in the format. Kohli, meanwhile, is in the top of the table with 283 runs, scoring two centuries and looking in sublime form. Both batters Wagon Wheel ðagainst Sri Lanka is as below :-
Virat looked at his talismanic best yet again as he eased into his 74th international ton overall. Virat looked domineering as ever throughout the entirety of his innings, as he struck ten fours and one six on his way to the three-figure mark. The former India skipper came to bat in the 16th over of the innings and wasted no time in getting his eye in. He relied on manoeuvring the strike early on and was quick to latch onto any freebie that was offered to him by the Sri Lankan bowlers.
Rohit Sharma | India captain: It was a great series for us against Sri Lanka. Lots of positives. We bowled well, got wickets when we needed and the batters throughout the series piling on the runs was good to watch. Good to see how he (Siraj) was bowling and he deserved all those slips. He is a rare talent, the way he has come up over the last few years is good to see. He has come from strength to strength and that’s really good for Indian cricket. We tried all sort of things (to get his fifer) but it didn’t happen unfortunately.
But the four wickets are all his and fifers will come. He has a few tricks up his sleeves which he is working on and it’s there to see. We’ll get to the drawing board quickly (for the next series) and see how the pitch is, then decide how the combinations will be. They (NZ) are coming off with a series win in Pakistan, so it won’t be an easy task at all.
Virat Kohli | Player of the Match | Player of the Series: I have no idea (about the MoS awards he has won). For me, it’s just a byproduct of the intent I have, mindset that I play with. Mindset is always to help the team win, bat for as long as possible and if you do that, you end up making a difference. I have always played for the right reasons, help the team as much as possible. It is just intent, playing for the right reasons. Ever since I came back from the long break, I have been feeling good. I don’t have that desperation to get to a milestone.
I am just enjoying my batting, being in a space where I can relax. Today as well, I was just happy to be out there batting. I am in a nice space right now and want this to continue. Shami has always been there for us but the way Siraj has come up has been outstanding against Sri Lanka. He has taken the maximum number of wickets in the powerplay, which was an issue for us early. He is always making the batters think, which is a great sign for us going into the World Cup.
Dasun Shanaka | Sri Lanka captain: It’s disappointing. Not the game we would have wanted but it happens sometimes. Bowlers and batters both need to learn. How to pick wickets on these pitches and how to score runs. No idea about that (on the updates about Bandara and Vandersay). Playing positive cricket is the key. If the boys showed intent, bowling will be different. While playing international cricket, we need to play with intent. I would like to congratulate Indian team for playing this level of cricket.
